Montebello “Beautiful Mountain” in Spanish and Italian as well, is a city in Los Angeles County, California, which is located in the southwestern area of the San Gabriel Valley is about 8.4 sq mi or 22 km2 and just about 8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is considered part of the Gateway Cities and therefor is a member of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments.
The city of Montebello was originally an agricultural community. Through the early part of the 20th century, it was known for its production of flowers, vegetables, fruits and berries. In 1917 things took a slight turn after the discovery of oil on the Anita Baldwin property by the Standard Oil Company. When Montebello was incorporation as a city in 1920, its oil fields were producing 8% of California’s crude oil.
